Book Corner

Most IPsec implementations can use X.509 digital certificates for authentication, although few people understand how they work. A recent book should help solve that problem. Planning for PKI (ISBN 0471397024) by Russ Housley and Tim Polk is an excellent overview of public key infrastructures in general, and X.509 digital certificates and their surrounding protocols in specific. The book only lightly covers certificates in IPsec, but there are long sections on how public key authentication is used in many different types of organizations.

Upcoming Events

RSA Security and Check Point Software Technologies will offer free seminars during June entitled Security for VPNs: Opportunities, Risks, Choices.

The Internet Security Conference (TISC) is well-known for attracting top-name Internet security experts and vendors, while still staying small enough for lots of personal interaction. This year's conference, held in Los Angeles June 4-8, has many VPN-specific tracks and in-depth coverage of IPsec.

The next VPN bakeoff will be held in Espoo, Finland (near Helsinki) August 13-19, 2001. This is the week following the IETF meeting in London, so many people will already be in Europe. Further details on the event will be available soon.
