Welcome to the latest issue of the VPNC Update. We hope you find the news in this issue valuable.
VPNC continues to grow with the always-active IPsec market. Our new member this month is:
Asita Technologies is a leader in seamlessly integrating high-speed VPN, networking, firewalling, policy routing, load balancing and management into a single network device. The Asita LineSpeed family offers wire-speed Internet VPN for 100 to 40,000+ simultaneous VPN tunnels at speeds of 5 Mbps to 2 Gbps using TripleDES encryption.
VPNC's members are often asked how well their products interoperate with the products of other VPNC members. Because this question comes up so often, VPNC will host its first interoperability demonstration at the upcoming VPNcon conference in October (described later in the newsletter). The demonstration will show a mesh of VPN gateways and clients interoperating in real time, and VPNcon attendees will be able to see the administrative interfaces of the products as they send packets over the demonstration net.

To date, five products from five vendors have received the Certificates
conformance logo.
The following product has received the Certificate conformance
logo in the past month:
Please see the VPNC conformance page for a complete list of vendors who have received the VPNC conformance logos in all categories.
Due to the ever-increasing interest in the new U.S. medical records privacy rules, VPNC has added a new page describing the HIPAA law. It is likely that IPsec systems will be a major method that medical firms will use to comply with the new rules. Also included on the page are links to resources from VPNC's members, including Baltimore Technologies, F-Secure, NetScreen, and RedCreek.

Anatomy of an IP Service Edge Switch is a new white paper from VPNC member Quarry Technologies. The paper describes the many types of services that Network Service Providers (NSPs) would like to provide (such as IPsec and quality of service for voice over IP), as well as how integrated high-end switches are providing these functions.
There was a lively discussion of the future of IKE at the recent IETF meeting in London. The discussion in the IPsec Working Group at the meeting, and on the mailing list after the meeting, showed that there is no strong consensus towards a single solution. Instead, there are three main paths that IPsec's key exchange will move forward:
There was general agreement that in the "restating IKE" option that some of IKE's lesser-used options can be eliminated from the document. This doesn't mean that those options cannot be used, but that they won't be clarified and will probably not be considered necessary for commercial interoperability.
There was less agreement about the scope of what to include in the "fixing IKE" option. Different people want different things fixed or added. There is general agreement that adding features to IKE will make it more complex and therefore harder to implement securely, but some people really want certain features added, particularly ones that have already been deployed by many vendors.
There are two main alternatives in the "replacing IKE" category that have been announced. The KINK Working Group is working on an IKE-like mechanism that uses Kerberos for key exchange. At the London meeting, a group of well-respected security folks announced that a new, significantly simpler and faster key exchange mechanism called JFK will be released shortly.
Networld+Interop, the giant networking show at which many VPNC members exhibit, returns to Atlanta, Georgia, September 9-14.
VPNcon Fall, being held October 15-18, in Alexandria, VA, is a large VPN-specific show with a detailed educational track. VPNC will also be hosting an interoperability demonstration, described earlier in the newsletter.
