Welcome to the latest issue of the VPNC Update. We hope you find the news in this issue valuable.
Last month's VPNcon was the showcase for VPNC's first live interoperability demonstration. The demonstration, held on the exhibits floor of the conference, showed live n-way interoperability between the following VPNC members' systems:
A brochure including an overview of the demonstration and a technical description of the network was given to expo attendees; an online version of the brochure is also available.
During the preparation for the demonstration, we were faced with the same problems that typical IS staff face in creating a multi-vendor IPsec WAN or extranet. Based on this experience, VPNC will soon embark on industry initiatives to help increase interoperability testing and verification.

This month, one VPNC member successfully finished their testing for Basic
and Rekeying conformance:
Please see the VPNC conformance page for a complete list of vendors who have received the VPNC conformance logos in all categories.

RSA Security has created an excellent introduction to IPsec VPNs. Implementing a Secure Virtual Private Network has IPsec basics, describes typical VPN scenarios, and gives good coverage to the often-confusing topic of IPsec remote access.
Cylink has an interesting paper covering quality of service as it relates to IPsec. Security and Performance Issues Associated with Voice and Video Over Internet Protocol covers such topics as the tradeoffs between speed and security, and the need for differentiated service.
The Infosecurity conference will take place December 4 to 6 in New York City. The conference covers all aspects of security, including IPsec VPNs.
The 52nd meeting of the IETF will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, December 9-14. There will be a handful of VPN-related sessions, including sessions for the IPsec and the IPsec Policy working groups. The submission deadline is November 14 for -00 Internet Drafts, and November 21 for other drafts.
One of the larger networking conferences is the annual ComNet, held in Washington DC January 28-31, 2002. This year's event includes a debate-style "VPN Showdown". While not as huge and Networld+Interop, ComNet attracts a sizable audience, and many VPNC members will be exhibiting.
