Welcome to the latest issue of the VPNC Update. We hope you find the news in this issue valuable.
VPNC continues to grow with the always-active IPsec market. Our new member this month is:
Bivio Networks
The Bivio Networks 1000 Series represents a new type of network device
that combines the best qualities of a high performance computer and a
gigabit speed network device in an integrated platform, at the price
point of a single network appliance. Instead of deploying separate
firewall, IPsec VPN, QoS, and IP routing platforms, the Bivio 1000
allows network operators to deploy a single platform that executes
software programs with the equivalent functionality and performance of
their hardware counterparts.

Understanding Virtual Private Networking is a new overview of IPsec VPNs from ADTRAN. This short, pamphlet-style guide gives concise definitions of VPNs that is particularly useful to people coming to the topic for the first time. It includes everything from the history of VPNs through a technical overview to the business case for VPNs.
A new standard, PKIX Certificate and CRL Profile (RFC 3280) was issued this month. All IPsec developers who deal with certificates should be interested in this long-awaited revision to RFC 2459. RFC 3280 clarifies many of the issues with PKIX certificates that have come up in the past few years, and changes RFC 2459 in many ways:
A companion document, Algorithms and Identifiers for PKIX (RFC 3279), describes the cryptographic algorithms used with PKIX. This material was previously in RFC 2459, and has been updated for this revision to PKIX.
