Welcome to the latest issue of the VPNC Update. We hope you find the news in this issue valuable.
VPNC continues to grow with the always-active IPsec market. Our new member this month is:
Inkra Networks
Inkra Networks offers one of the most dynamic, cost-effective IP service
delivery solution in the industry, enabling data centers to fully
automate IP service management, and significantly reduce web application
infrastructure costs. Inkra's Virtual Service Architecture (VSA) and
Virtual Service Switch (VSS) product family virtualizes and integrates
multiple IP services such as firewall, load balancing, SSL, and IPSec
VPN in scalable hardware platforms. Inkra's 1500 and 4000 VSS products
support tens to hundreds of dedicated IP service topologies called
virtual racks.
This month, one VPNC member's products successfully finished their testing for the Basic Interoperability logo, proving interoperation with each of the other 11 systems in the test lab:
Please see the VPNC interoperability and conformance testing page for a complete list of vendors who have received the VPNC testing logos in all categories.
The VPN world is plagued with many often-conflicting definitions of what is and is not a virtual private network. About six months ago, VPNC released the first version of its now-popular white paper titled "VPN Technologies: Definitions and Requirements". Based on feedback from VPNC members and their customers, we have revised the paper in two important areas.
We removed discussion of "provider-provisioned VPNs" because they are essentially identical to trusted VPNs. We also added two common non-MPLS technologies, ATM and frame-relay, to the list of common VPN technologies used in trusted VPNs. Although many people have predicted that customers will move away from ATM and frame-relay circuits in the near future, many customers (and providers) say that this will happen more slowly than predicted.
The revised white paper is now available for free download.
