VPN Standards News

Two Internet Drafts that are of great importance to any service provider who offers MPLS-based VPNs are now in IETF Last Call. BGP/MPLS IP VPNs aims to (finally!) standardize the Layer 3 VPNs commonly called "RFC 2547 VPNs". A companion document, Applicability Statement for BGP/MPLS IP VPNs describes how these VPNs meet the requirements for trusted VPNs and how Internet service providers can offer different topologies based on the proposed standard.

The IETF Last Call period is the final time for people to make comments before the IESG decides what to do with the documents. (For more information on the IETF process, see the Tao of the IETF.) The Last Call period began on May 20 and ends June 2. The official notice of the Last Call can be found here.

Upcoming VPN-related Events

China VPN and MPLS Conference
Beijing / August 31 - September 1, 2004
This conference focuses on the use of VPNs, particularly MPLS, in China. It involves manufacturers both from both inside and outside China, as well as major VPN users in China.
