VPNC Testing News

VPNC testing logo

It has been a very busy month in the VPNC test lab. We have a slew of new systems that have passed our tests for interoperability, as shown below. We crossed a new threshold, with 30 systems in the VPNC lab that show interoperability in up-to-date configurations. Even better, we already have additional systems in the lab that will be tested in the near future.

This month, three products from VPNC members have received logos for Basic Interoperability. The systems receiving new Basic Interoperability logos this month are:

In addition, three products which had already received logos for Basic Interoperability received the logo for AES Interoperability:

In addition, one product which had already received logos for Basic Interoperability and AES Interoperability was re-tested after updating its firmware:

See the VPNC testing page for full lists of all the VPNC members' products which have proven interoperability.

VPNC Testing in the Future

Even with all this great momentum in the VPNC lab with our IPsec interoperability testing, we will soon be expanding in a few additional directions. VPNC's mission is to help consumers of all the common VPN technologies to understand the technologies better and to be assured that VPNC's members' products interoperate. With that in mind, we will be adding the following tests in the future.

SSL -- VPNC is in the early-testing phase of testing SSL VPNs that act as reverse proxies in front of corporate HTTP servers. "Early testing" means that we are receiving member's products and testing them against our preliminary test plans, which are based on our discussion with current corporate users and the trade press. This first round of pre-testing is to make sure our tests work and that our results will be valid and useful to VPNC's members and their customers.

IKEv2 -- A few of VPNC's members are near completion on their preliminary IKEv2 code and have asked for VPNC to start in-lab testing for interoperability. We do not expect to be issuing interoperability logos immediately, but we are happy to help out our members who want to test their early implementations with other members in the lab. Now that IKEv2 is a standard (although it will probably not have an RFC number for many months), we expect to see much more interest in IKEv2 and interoperability in the coming months.

IPsec in IPv6 -- An even smaller number of VPNC's members have expressed an interest in IPsec testing under IPv6, but many say that they're hearing more interest from their customers in IPv6 and want to be ready when the market is. VPNC will set up a test area in the lab for IPv6 testing, particularly for robustness of IPsec in IPv6-IPv4 tunneling scenarios.
