Welcome to the latest issue of the VPNC Update. We hope you find the news in this issue valuable.
Novell is a leading provider of information solutions. Novell BorderManager offers an array of features to protect the network and its resources. From firewall and VPN functionality to Internet access control and content filtering, Novell BorderManager secures remote access to network resources, provides IPsec-based VPN services, has a FIPS-140 validated encryption engine, and includes advanced authentication for remote access VPN and browser-based administration. It also provides firewall and packet filtering services on the gateway.
One of the popular features on the VPNC web site is the chart of features that VPNC members support. The chart shows important VPN-related features and how widespread their availability is.
Because IPsec-based VPNs and SSL-based VPNs share some features, but differ in many ways, VPNC has recently split the features chart into two charts, an IPsec VPN feature chart and an SSL VPN feature chart. Because many of VPNC's members sell both types of VPNs, many companies appear on both charts.
VPNC will add new features to the two charts over time to match features that become important in the VPN market.

Network Address Translators (NATs) often have very serious negative effects on Internet protocols. IPsec implementers have long known the problems of using IKEv1 when a remote-access user is behind a NAT, and have worked out a fairly-successful method for having IPsec work through NATs. The solution is described in two new standards, Negotiation of NAT-Traversal in the IKE (RFC 3947) and UDP Encapsulation of IPsec ESP Packets (RFC 3948).
The first of these two standards describes how to detect whether or not there is a NAT between a roaming IPsec client and a server. The second tells what to do about it, namely how to encapsulate the IPsec packets themselves in UDP. The two also help fix problems by NATs that are trying to be "helpful" to IPsec but in fact get in the way.
VPNC supports the use of these two standards for IKEv1 implementations and will begin interoperability testing of NAT-detecting IKEv1 clients and servers during 2005.
IPsec/IKEv2 Interoperability Workshop
Santa Clara, California / February 22-24, 2005
The main focus of the event will be testing IKEv2 functionality. All vendors with IKEv2-based VPN products are encouraged to bring their latest products to test in a multi-vendor forum.
Networld+Interop Spring
Las Vegas, NV / May 1-6, 2005
Probably the largest networking show in the world, this conference has a sizable show floor for vendors and a large, fast-paced educational track. Because of the large attendance, many VPNC members regularly exhibit at N+I. VPNC's director, Paul Hoffman, will be speaking about interop testing and how to set up an in-house test lab.
