VPNC Testing News

VPNC testing logo

VPNC regularly re-tests systems in its interoperability labs when the products go through a major software or firmware update. This re-testing (which is at no cost to the members) assures both the VPN buying community and the vendors themselves that their latest version of the products still have all the interoperability that earlier versions had.

This month, one product was retested for its logos for SSL Portal and SSL Exchange:

See the VPNC testing page for full lists of all the VPNC members' products which have proven interoperability.

VPN Standards News

Recently, the IETF accepted Cryptographic Suites for IPsec as a Proposed Standard. This document specifies two suites of cryptographic settings that can be used with IPsec in IKEv1 and the upcoming IKEv2 (as well as in manual keying mode) to greatly simplify configuration for VPN administrators, which will lead to quicker setup of IPsec VPN systems.

The new standard defines two suites, called simply "VPN-A" and "VPN-B", that can be used across all IPsec systems. Instead of forcing administrators and end users to select from a laundry list of choices, implementations following the standard can have a single choice for a suite that covers all the needed cryptographic functions. VPN-A matches the commonly-used corporate VPN security used in IKEv1, and VPN-B is what many people expect the commonly-used corporate VPN security within a few years.

All systems in VPNC's IPsec interoperability testing lab already have all the cryptographic functions for VPN-A, and some have started to follow the new standard by putting a single "VPN-A" choice in their administrative interface. VPNC will soon start testing these systems for interoperability using the new standard.

VPNC supports the use of this new standard for IKEv1 implementations and will begin interoperability testing of it in the near future.

Upcoming VPN-related Events

Networld+Interop Spring
Las Vegas, NV / May 1-6, 2005

Probably the largest networking show in the world, this conference has a sizable show floor for vendors and a large, fast-paced educational track. Because of the large attendance, many VPNC members regularly exhibit at N+I. VPNC's director, Paul Hoffman, will be speaking about interop testing and how to set up an in-house test lab.

MPLScon 2005
New York / May 16-19, 2005

The trusted VPN industry mostly revolves around MPLS, and MPLScon is by far the most important event for the MPLS market. The conference is mostly about the wide-ranging educational tracks, but also has a good-sized exhibit space.
