VPNC Testing News

The SSL Firefox test assures SSL VPN users that users can access a particular SSL gateway using the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. Many companies are allowing or requiring their users use the Mozilla Firefox web browser, so having their users be able to access their SSL VPN though that browser is important. To pass, the SSL Gateway must be able to correctly display all tests used in the SSL Portal test when using Mozilla Firefox.

In addition, this month one product received its logo for IPsec AES Interoperability:

VPN Standards News

The recent news about some hash algorithms having previously-unknown weaknesses has caused some VPN users to wonder what they should do differently, if anything. VPNC's director, Paul Hoffman, has teamed up with well-known cryptographer Bruce Schneier to produce a new Internet Draft on the topic. Attacks on Cryptographic Hashes in Internet Protocols summarizes the use of hashes in many IETF protocols such as IPsec and SSL, discusses how the collision attacks affect and do not affect the protocols, shows how to thwart known attacks on digital certificates, and discusses future directions for protocol designers. The document doesn't give any firm conclusions on what to do, but is meant to stimulate discussion in the security community so that the IETF can determine how to proceed.

Upcoming VPN-related Events

Networld+Interop Spring
Las Vegas, NV / May 1-6, 2005

Probably the largest networking show in the world, this conference has a sizable show floor for vendors and a large, fast-paced educational track. Because of the large attendance, many VPNC members regularly exhibit at N+I. VPNC's director, Paul Hoffman, will be speaking about interop testing and how to set up an in-house test lab.

MPLScon 2005
New York / May 16-19, 2005

The trusted VPN industry mostly revolves around MPLS, and MPLScon is by far the most important event for the MPLS market. The conference is mostly about the wide-ranging educational tracks, but also has a good-sized exhibit space.
