Welcome to the latest issue of the VPNC Update. We hope you find the news in this issue valuable.
VPNC's extensive SSL VPN testing continues with the fourth in its series of interoperability logos for SSL VPNs. The new SSL File Access test assures SSL VPN users that they can read and write files on CIFS/SMB file servers that are protected by a particular SSL gateway. CIFS (the Common Internet File System) uses the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol to make files available to users on the network.
To pass, the SSL gateway must be able to correctly allow remote users to both read and write files on two different CIFS/SMB servers on the protected network. One server is running Windows Server 2000, and the other is running Windows Server 2003. The two CIFS/SMB systems are similar, but they have differences that can sometimes cause clients to not be able to correctly interoperate. Because many organizations still use Windows Server 2000, while many others use Windows Server 2003, VPNC requires all systems that receive this logo to work correctly with both servers.
Different SSL VPN gateways present the remote access user with different views of the CIFS/SMB filesystem. VPNC's test used the file and directory display mechanism required by the individual gateway.
The initial products from VPNC members that have passed the SSL File Access test are:

Interop New York
New York, NY / December 12-15, 2005
This is a smaller version of Interop Las Vegas, which is
probably the largest networking show in the world. This conference has a
sizable show floor for vendors and a large, fast-paced educational track.
Because of the large attendance, many VPN vendors
regularly exhibit at Interop.
