Welcome to the latest issue of the VPNC Update. We hope you find the news in this issue valuable.

VPNC Testing News

VPNC testing logo

VPNC has tests for both IPsec VPN interoperability and SSL VPN interoperability. Most of the systems in the VPNC lab are for one type of VPNC or the other, but a few systems cover both.

This month, one member received the SSL Portal, SSL Firefox, SSL Exchange, and SSL File Access interoperability logos:

This month, one member received both the IPsec Basic Interoperability logo and the IPsec AES interoperability logo:

This month, one member retested for both the IPsec Basic Interoperability logo and the IPsec AES interoperability logo based on a new version of their software:

See the VPNC testing page for full lists of all the VPNC members' products which have proven interoperability.

VPN Standards News

The IETF recently published three RFCs that make up the basis for many trusted VPNs based on MPLS. RFC 4364, "BGP/MPLS IP VPNs", is the standards-track replacement for the earlier informational RFC 2547. The new RFC clarifies some of the terminology used in the earlier one, and goes into more detail on some important implementation issues. BGP/MPLS VPNs are probably the most popular style of trusted VPNs provided by ISPs today.

The new standard comes with two important companion documents: RFC 4365, which describes when BGP/MPLS VPNs are and are not useful in a network, and RFC 4381, which gives an in-depth analysis of the security properties of BGP/MPLS VPNs. Given that trusted VPNs rely on the proper setup by the ISP instead of cryptography, understanding the applicability and security properties of these VPNs is important before deploying them. These two documents will be particularly useful to users who are deciding what type of VPN to deploy.

Featured VPNC Member White Paper

One of the more popular features on VPNC's web site is our extensive list of white papers from our members. These cover a range of topics from VPN basics to cryptography. As interesting new white papers appear, we will list them in the VPNC Update.

Secure Access For Healthcare: SSL VPN Advantages from AEP Networks gives a very good overview of the business case of using SSL VPNs in an environment with both many remote users and compliance mandates. It explains how to use SSL VPNs with legacy applications (of which the health industry has plenty) and how to show compliance to governmental requirements such as HIPAA.
