Welcome to the latest issue of the VPNC Update. We hope you find the news in this issue valuable.
This month, VPNC welcomes another new member: Certicom.
Certicom protects the value of content, software, and devices with open, standards-based security technology that has been adopted by the National Security Agency (NSA) for classified and sensitive government communications. With over 350 patents and patents pending worldwide covering key aspects of Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC), Certicom enables developers to quickly address the security requirements of government agencies, smart device manufacturers, service providers, and enterprise software developers while delivering the most security per bit of any known public-key scheme.
This month, VPNC is proud to announce a new logo in its popular series of SSL VPN interoperability tests: SSL JavaScript. The SSL JavaScript test assures SSL VPN users that a particular SSL gateway system will work correctly as a front end for a corporate web portal that uses JavaScript that includes URLs. This is a specialized version of the SSL Portal logo, which only tests URLs in HTML. Many corporate web sites make extensive use of JavaScript, and rewriting URLs in JavaScript is more difficult than rewriting URLs in HTML.
To pass, the SSL gateway must be able to correctly interpret an URL that is formed by JavaScript code. The test URL points to a page on a web server on the protected network, and is made up of the concatenation of two variables, such as "http://www.example.com/" and "somepage.html". The test is run on up-to-date versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox; the gateway must work correctly with both.
The products from VPNC members that have passed the SSL JavaScript test are:
Also this month, one member retested with a new version of their software for both the IPsec Basic Interoperability logo and the IPsec AES interoperability logo:
See the VPNC testing page for full lists of all the VPNC members' products which have proven interoperability.

What Is a Virtual Private Network?, from Cisco, is the opening chapter of the new book, Comparing, Designing, and Deploying VPNs by Mark Lewis. The white paper introduces all types of VPNs, including secure, trusted, and hybrid VPNs. It includes a surprisingly comprehensive "family tree" of VPNs types. If you want a single place to quickly come up to speed on the names and types of VPNs, this is a great place to start.
Interop Spring 2006
Las Vegas, NV / April 30 - May 5, 2006
Probably the largest networking show in the world, this conference has a
sizable show floor for vendors and a large, fast-paced educational track.
Because of the large attendance, many VPNC members regularly exhibit at
Interop. VPNC's director, Paul Hoffman, will be speaking on
"Pros and Cons of SSL", particularly as they relate to remote
access VPNs.
MPLScon 2006
New York / May 22-25, 2006
The trusted VPN industry mostly revolves around MPLS, and
MPLScon is by far the most important event for the MPLS market.
The conference is mostly about the wide-ranging educational
tracks, but also has a good-sized exhibit space. This year's
conference will also feature an MPLS interoperability demonstration.
