One of the more popular features on VPNC's web site is our extensive list of white papers from our members. These cover a range of topics from VPN basics to cryptography. As interesting new white papers appear, we will list them in the VPNC Update.
A new white paper, Remote-Access VPNs: Business Productivity, Deployment, and Security Considerations, from Cisco, is a very good introduction to choose between the different types of remote-access VPNs. It has a good comparison between SSL VPNs and IPsec VPNs, focused on the differences that affect remote access use of VPNs. There is also a good section on deployment issues that affect both types of VPNs.
