Welcome to the latest issue of the VPNC Update. We hope you find the news in this issue valuable.
One of the services VPNC performs for its members is to promote VPN technologies to the market. Last month, the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released a new document, Guide to SSL VPNs, which was co-authored by VPNC's director, Paul Hoffman. The guide helps readers (mostly US government professionals) understand SSL VPN technologies and learn how to deploy SSL VPNs in their organizations.
Following up on that publication, Paul Hoffman gave a presentation at the Security Area group at the 72nd IETF meeting in Dublin, Ireland. The focus of the presentation was lessons that the IETF can learn from the design, and the popularity, of SSL VPNs.

One of the more popular features on VPNC's web site is our extensive list of white papers from our members. These cover a range of topics from VPN basics to cryptography. As interesting new white papers appear, we will list them in the VPNC Update.
A new white paper, SSL VPN Design Considerations, from Cisco, is a actually a chapter from a book published by Cisco Press. The chapter stands on its own as a good white paper on the features of SSL VPNs and how to incorporate an SSL VPN into an existing network design. It talks about most of the major SSL VPN technologies and how each affects network planning.
