Depends on details.  If the simpler protocol gives a performance advantage
equal to, say, six months of hardware improvement, that is questionable as
a criterion for selection in protocol standardization.  That sort of edge
would matter only if all else were equal, or very nearly so.  In such a
case, the simplicity is a stronger argument than the performance advantage.

If the advantage is equal to five years' hardware improvement, that's more
substantive.
