Well, you're right to be confused.

Some people use Xauth, some use L2TP, some use both.  The IETF's IPSRA
working group is also working on yet another completely different proposal.
Each of the proposals has its own merits, and is better suited for different
types of VPN deployment.

I doubt you'll see anything change in the near future, as the IPSRA working
group is moving very slowly.

Your best bet would be to go with a vendor that supports both XAUTH and L2TP
(a.k.a Cisco ;)
