Ok - I'll take apart the vendor code and see what it is they do. As I suspect they take some field from the x509 of the TLS cert during the EAP exchange.- This is clever as this is where that server is provided to the client as part of the 802.1X exchange. Which means that the client does not have to have any configuration at all - and can be brought into the field without any a-priori configuration.

While on that topic - I noticed that MacOSX started to have a similar function:
